Exceptionally rare and unusual silver and enamel hunting- or shooting-interest letter opener/knife. By A. Barrett, Piccadilly, London, 1902.
Hallmarked for A. Barrett & Sons, London, 1902 (maker’s mark rubbed). Also signed on the blade: A. Barrett and Sons, 63 & 64 Piccadilly, London.
While this is a very scare letter opener, Barrett & Sons appear to have made a few of variants of this opener. Most often the ‘roundel’ top is fitted with a magnifying glass. We can find one other example where it is fitted with a coin or medallion. This is the only example we can find with an enamel hunting/shooting scene.
Approx. length. 20.5cms. Approx. weight 98grs.
Good antique condition. The maker’s mark is rubbed as noted above, and there appears to be an old repair to the back of the silver roundel - see final photos.
A rare and impressive piece.
