This antique Afghan Mushwani Baluch runner rug dates from the 1920 period. The woven wool piece displays deep red and charcoal hues across a narrow rectangular field patterned with geometric diamond medallions, step-latchhook borders, and repeated hooked motifs, alongside a fringed edge and subtle signs of age with slight even wear. Measuring 302 cm high, 125 cm wide, and 1 cm deep, the runner handles heavy domestic use with a very firm pile. Suitable for placement in an entrance hall or a gentleman's library, the tribal design brings structured pattern to a hallway or high-traffic floor space. The heavy domestic construction provides durable ground cover for daily wear and tear.

Mushwani Baluch rugs are hand-woven textiles created by nomadic tribes along the borders of Afghanistan and Persia, renowned for dense knotting, dark rich colour palettes, and intricate geometric diamond motifs.

These rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the foundation, dyed using natural vegetable and mineral dyes to produce deep reds, indigos, and dark browns.

Authentic early 20th-century tribal runners feature hand-spun wool warp and weft, subtle natural variations in colour known as abrash, flexible handles, and soft wool pile crafted on portable looms.

A long tribal runner provides grounding texture and warmth in narrow spaces such as hallways, entryways, or alongside a bed, pairing effectively with natural timber floors, neutral wall tones, or dark wood furnishings.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush bar, rotate periodically to ensure balanced wear, place a rug pad underneath, and consult a professional textile conservator for deep cleaning.
