Description

Round silver drop earrings beautifully engraved with a swooping swallow design typical of the Victorian Aesthetic period (c.1885-1901). In Victorian England a flying swallow was traditionally considered a token of good luck and the bird represented enduring love and loyalty, as the swallow mates for life. These earrings are particularly nice as they have retained their original tops, rather than having modern silver wires.

SIZE: The pendants measure approx 1.5cm across, the total drop from the top of the ear wire is 2.3cm.

WEIGHT: 2.2g. The earrings are hollow so lovely and light to wear.

MATERIALS: 925 sterling silver.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: Stamped STANDARD SILVER.

CONDITION: The earrings are in very good antique condition with a lovely patina; we have not overpolished the silver but it could be taken to a higher shine if required.

ERA: Victorian c.1880-90s.

During the Victorian era, swallow motifs were exceptionally popular symbols representing loyalty, affection, and safe return, frequently incorporated into sentimental tokens and mourning pieces.

These pieces are typically forged from sterling or coin silver, often utilising hand-engraving techniques such as line chasing and repousse to create detailed imagery.

Authentic items often feature period-appropriate closures such as wire hooks or shepherds crooks, hand-carved detailing, characteristic patination, and sometimes makers marks or silver purity stamps.

Pairing historic silver pieces with minimalist modern attire creates a striking contrast that highlights the intricate craftsmanship without overwhelming the ensemble.

Store silver items in a dry, tarnish-resistant lined box away from direct sunlight, and clean them gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the natural patina.
