The Meiji period spans from 1868 to 1912, a time of rapid modernisation and opening to Western trade, which caused a surge in the export of highly refined decorative arts such as cloisonne enamel and bronze work.

Cloisonne typically involves a metallic base body made of copper or brass, upon which thin metal wires are soldered to form compartments known as cloisons, which are subsequently filled with coloured enamel paste and fired multiple times.

Authentic pieces from the Meiji era often feature extremely fine wirework, complex multi-coloured enamels, subtle gradations in colour field, and visible signs of age such as micro-crazing in the enamel or minor oxidisation on the exposed metal rims.

A historical vase functions effectively as a focal point when placed on a minimalist mantelpiece, side table, or open bookshelf, allowing the intricate craftsmanship and colour palette to contrast cleanly against modern architectural lines.

Antique cloisonne should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent enamel degradation and metal tarnishing, and cleaned only gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth without the use of chemical solvents or abrasive cleaners.
