Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chippendale furniture is an 18th-century English style created by cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, combining mid-18th-century Rococo, Gothic, and Chinese influences. Key hallmarks include intricate carved back splats, serpentine top rails, cabriole legs, and ball-and-claw feet.

These seating pieces are traditionally constructed from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany due to its fine grain, strength, and suitability for detailed hand carving. Secondary woods such as pine or oak were typically used for frame interiors, with upholstery stuffed using horsehair, burlap, and cotton.

Look for hand-carved decorative elements, traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, and natural wood oxidisation inside the joints. Genuine period or high-quality revival items display substantial weight due to dense mahogany and precise fretwork along the back splats.

Position the settee in an entryway, formal drawing room, or along a wide hallway as a focal anchor piece. Updating the upholstery with neutral, textured linen or contemporary velvet balances the dark, ornate mahogany carving with modern decorative schemes.

Dust the wood regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax paste annually to nourish the finish and maintain lustre. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent wood shrinkage, cracking, or fabric fading.
