Antique Uzbek Prayer Suzani, Silk on Yellow Cotton Ground, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 6ft 9in x 4ft 3in (205 x 130cm).

Antique Uzbek silk suzani of prayer format on a yellow cotton ground.

Circa 1900.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are often embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This example is of prayer format known as 'jo-i-namoz' with six solar discs on a yellow cotton ground, possibly from Urgut, in the Samarkand region.

The condition is good with only very slight wear and no repairs.

The suzani is ready for display.

Ref: T-0230.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A suzani is a traditional hand-embroidered textile created across Central Asia, particularly in Uzbekistan. Historically crafted by brides and their families as part of a wedding dowry, these panels feature intricate symbolic motifs worked in silk thread.

Traditional suzanis are constructed using silk thread embroidery worked onto a base fabric of woven cotton or silk-cotton blend cloth known as adras. The ground fabric is often constructed from narrow handwoven strips sewn together before embroidery.

Authentic pieces display hand-drawn embroidery lines, natural dye variations, and irregularities in stitching. Look for tambour or couch stitching techniques and construction from multiple narrow loom strips rather than a single modern wide piece of cloth.

An antique suzani can be mounted and framed as statement wall art, suspended from a decorative wooden rod, or draped over the back of a sofa or bed headboard to introduce pattern, colour, and textural depth to a room.

Keep antique silk textiles away from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading and fibre degradation. Vacuum gently using a low-suction brush attachment through a protective mesh screen, and consult a specialist textile conservator for deep cleaning.
