Unmarked English / European silver box with pique faux tortoiseshell lid inlaid with engraved mother of pearl flowers and squares in a diaper pattern, circa 1790.
Patch boxes contained beauty patches, little pieces of fabric that were stuck to the face to hide blemishes and scars caused by disease or act as a seductive beauty accessory.
A near identical patch box is in the Pitt Rivers museum Oxford, Italy or Britain, c. 1750–1850
In very good sound condition, some slight raising of the silver pique.
