Description

A beautiful antique burr walnut leather top kidney shaped desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1920’s period.

The quality is outstanding, this has a beautiful design and is a very practical size. The kidney shaped top has an inset black leather writing surface and walnut banding around the edges. There are five drawers which have detailed brass handles and nicely dovetailed joints. This stands on cabriole legs with shell carving at the knees, the back is also nicely polished, so this can be used as a free standing item.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with just some minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

FAQs

Kidney-shaped desks first gained popularity during the late 19th and early 20th eras, often inspired by earlier French neoclassical and Victorian designs. Their distinctive curved silhouette was engineered to wrap comfortably around the user while offering an elegant alternative to traditional rectangular workstations.

These pieces typically feature solid timber frames finished with decorative wood veneers such as burr walnut, mahogany, or burl ash. The writing surface is traditionally inset with a tooled leather or skiver panel, complemented by dovetail-jointed drawers and cast brass hardware.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction details such as hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer boxes, hand-turned or carved wooden elements, and appropriate ageing of the wood and leather surface. Makers marks, traditional brass locks, and uniform patination also indicate period manufacture rather than modern reproduction.

An antique desk serves as a sophisticated focal point in a home office or living space, pairing well with contemporary minimalist seating to create a balanced contrast. Placing it freestanding in the centre of a room highlights the curved silhouette and finished rear panelling.

Burr walnut should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and maintained with appropriate furniture wax applied sparingly. The leather insert requires regular dusting and occasional treatment with specialist leather balms to prevent drying and cracking.
