A Superb George III Silver Wine Funnel & Strainer

18th century
Description

An excellent hallmarked silver wine funnel and strainer from the reign of George III, dating to 1822. The funnel is detachable from the strainer, has unusual ribbed decoration to the tapering body and still bares the original Armorial. The spout of the funnel is curved to allow wine to spread across the decanter neck or side of the glass. Surface contact with air increases and this promotes oxygenation, bringing out the full flavours of the wine.

The strainer is rounded, with a wide mouth and finished with a gadroon rim. To one side is a shaped clip for attaching to decanter or Claret jug and the centre is pierced with attractive geometric holes. A wonderful, usable piece of good gauge Georgian silver. Dimensions below.
