Description

A rare early 19th century high quality hallmarked silver pocket watch by George Brown of Beverley, Yorkshire. Watch number 3317, 1842.

This superb example of early horology has a finely engraved heavy silver case that bears the initials A M. It is hallmarked for London 1842. The English chain driven fusee movement is a work of art, finely gilded and elaborately hand fretted and engraved.

It is fully signed and numbered with the addition of the watchmaker's location, Beverley, Yorkshire.

This watch is in superb original condition. It came from an avid old time collection where all the watches were working and serviced.

This splendid timepiece still winds and ticks away happily. We are selling this rare antique watch as an early collector’s piece and as such we cannot offer a guarantee other than it is fully working at the time of sale.

We would suggest that such an early watch should not be considered for daily use.

We have videoed the watch showing it working and we would be happy to send it by email/WhatsApp.

The watch is in lovely condition with a perfect dial, glass, a good heavy case showing light ware and a beautiful movement. A watch key is also provided

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

Victorian silver pocket watches typically feature sterling silver cases, white enamel dials with Roman numerals, and intricate mechanical movements produced during the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901.

These timepieces were predominantly constructed using sterling silver for the outer cases, brass and steel for the complex internal gear trains, and fired glass enamel for the watch faces.

Authenticity is verified by examining the hallmark stamps inside the silver case, checking for the presence of a fusee chain movement, and inspecting the hand-engraved maker signatures on the inner dust cover.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed on a dedicated brass pocket watch stand, placed within a glass-topped collectors cabinet, or styled on a gentlemans desk surface.

Preservation requires storing the watch in a dry environment away from direct sunlight, avoiding over-winding, and having the delicate mechanical movement serviced regularly by a professional horologist.
