Antique English Silver Half Hunter Pocket Watch, 1900

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique English silver half hunter pocket watch, 1900.

The watch has an English ¾ plate stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement was manufactured by The Lancashire Watch Company and is signed, ‘Made for JA&NS, Regent Street, London’. The initials stand for the Junior Army & Navy Stores… Junior Army & Navy Stores Ltd was a prominent late 19th / early 20th century co-operative society located at York House, 15 Regent Street. It was founded in 1879 by Major Clench, and operated as a competitor to the larger Army & Navy Cooperative Society. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 51mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside all three covers for Chester 1900 together with the maker’s mark for Thomas Hewitt, managing director of The Lancashire Watch Company. The case is in lovely condition, just some age related rubbing to the engine turned detail. Lovely dark blue enamel infill in the Roman numerals to the front of the case.

The winding crown pushes in to open the front cover.

Inside, there is a glass lens which is in lovely condition.

The dial has a few hairlines but they are faint. Pin-set hands. The minute hand is a period replacement. Special half hunter hour hand so that the time can be read when the front cover is closed.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A half hunter pocket watch is a protective timepiece featuring an outer case with a central glass aperture surrounded by enamel Roman numerals, allowing the user to view the time without opening the front cover.

Pocket watches from this era were traditionally constructed with solid sterling silver cases bearing official assay hallmarks, enamel dials with printed or inlaid numerals, and mechanical brass movements.

Authentic pieces feature British assay office hallmarks stamped inside the case covers, including the walking lion symbol for sterling silver, a town mark, and a specific date letter corresponding to the turn of the twentieth century.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed on a dedicated brass or glass dome stand on a desk, mounted inside a shadow box frame, or styled on a valet tray alongside other historic accessories.

Keep the timepiece stored in a dry, low-humidity environment, polish the silver case gently with a clean microfibre cloth to control tarnish, and have the mechanical movement periodically serviced by a qualified horologist.
