Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, fire dogs (andirons) and grates were essential hearth components designed to elevate burning wood or coal off the floor. Elevating fuel improved airflow and combustion efficiency while containing ash within a designated central area.

Authentic nineteenth-century hearthware was predominantly cast from heavy iron or forged from wrought iron. Cast iron allowed for intricate decorative motifs such as fleur-de-lis finials and rosettes, while offering structural tolerance to extreme temperatures.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle irregularities from sand-casting molds, noticeable seam lines, and significant weight. Surface oxidisation, authentic soot deposits in non-decorative crevices, and signs of thermal wear along the grate bars indicate original historical use.

An antique grate functions as a structural focal point inside both working and decorative fireplaces. In non-working fireplaces, these pieces can be styled with birch logs, LED lights, or left unadorned inside a painted hearth alcove to highlight the ironwork detail.

To preserve cast iron, keep the metal dry to prevent rust formation. Light surface rust can be brushed away using fine wire wool before applying traditional graphite black grate polish or iron paste to protect the finish and restore deep dark colouration.
