Waterloo Bridge, London Ca 1910: Lone Figure, the Play of Light on Water Oil on Board Painting

1900 - 1920
Description

The water in this painting is almost hypnotic. It glimmers and glitters in iridescent shades, There is.a tranquility right below the bustle of the city. Depicted is the first Waterloo Bridge (originally named the Strand Bridge) designed by John Rennie in 1809-10, with a lone figure on the water.

Researching this unsigned work from the early 20th Century, I discovered a near identical watercolour by the Irish artist Edward Louis Lawrenson (1868-1940). I have not been able to establish whether our painting is part of a series Lawrenson made of the subject, or whether a contemporary of his copied it, leaving out a certain number of details.I find it more plausible that our oil is a study by the hand of Lawrenson, but cannot be certain of the attribution. Interestingly, I acquired this view of London likely by an Irish artist, in Paris!

While in the army, a family tradition, Lawrenson exhibited with the Watercolour Society of Ireland. He came to Paris In 1900 to pursue his studies. He first worked with Filippo Colarossi, and then under the Art Nouveau master Alphonse Mucha. Lawrenson subsequently went to Holland to work with George Hitchcock. By 1910, he had established a studio at 20 Holland Park Road, London. He exhibited with a number of societies and galleries including the Alpine Gallery, the Fine Art Society, the Royal Academy, the Royal Hibernian Academy, and the Royal Scottish Academy. Works by Lawrenson are held in the British Museum, the Towner Gallery, Brighton and Hove Museum and Art Gallery, and Manchester Art Gallery. A selection of Lawrenson's aquatint etchings were exhibited as part of the National Gallery of Ireland's Making their Mark: Irish Painter-Etchers 1880-1930 exhibition in 2019.

Our oil on board measures 23 x 33 cm. The overall size in a quality frame is 33 x 44 cm
