FAQs

Mid-20th-century floral still life works often feature detailed compositions set against contrasting dark backgrounds to highlight botanical hues. Artists from this era frequently combined traditional realism with freer brushwork and rich oil pigment application.

These artworks are typically painted using oil pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames from this period often consist of carved wood with hand-applied gold leaf, gilt finishes, or plaster mouldings.

Authentic pieces usually display natural canvas aging, subtle craquelure in the paint layer, and hand-signed artist signatures near the lower edges. The back of the canvas or stretcher frame often shows period-appropriate wood darkening and mounting hardware.

Positioning a gilt-framed botanical painting above a neutral sideboard or mantelpiece creates a refined focal point. Balancing the classical aesthetic with clean-lined furniture prevents the space from feeling overly formal.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Clean dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or water which can damage the varnish.
