Edwardian marriage boxes were typically crafted during the reign of King Edward VII (19011910) and were often given as wedding gifts to hold marriage certificates, jewellery, or other small keepsakes. They frequently incorporated romantic motifs such as wedding bells, floral garlands, and carriage scenes.

These pieces were predominantly made from sterling silver, often featuring detailed repousse and chased ornamentation where designs were hammered and punched into relief from the reverse side. Many interiors were lined with silk, velvet, or satin to protect delicate items.

Authentic pieces bear official British hallmarks stamped on the metal, which typically include a lion passant indicating sterling standard, a city mark for the assay office, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of assay.

An antique silver box can be styled as a focal point on a mantlepiece, coffee table, or desk, adding a layer of metallic texture and historical contrast to modern minimalist or transitional interiors.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a soft microfibre cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding harsh abrasives that can wear down fine repousse details. Storing the item in a low-humidity environment helps minimise natural tarnish progression.
