A chatelaine button hook was a small personal accessory suspended from a chatelaine belt hook, used by Victorian women to fasten tightly fitted boots, gloves, and dresses featuring numerous small buttons.

These items are traditionally constructed from hallmarked sterling silver, decorated with bezel-set natural banded chalcedony or agate stones, often mined and worked in Scotland or England during the nineteenth century.

Authenticity is determined by examining maker marks, silver hallmarks indicating the assay office and year of production, hand-cut stone settings, and the appropriate patination consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing techniques.

These small objects are typically displayed inside glass-topped display cases, shadow boxes, or styled upon vintage jewellery trays alongside other curiosities for a cabinet-of-curiosities aesthetic.

Preservation involves avoiding liquid silver dips, which can damage softer stones like agate or degrade foil backs; instead, use a soft microfibre cloth for gentle polishing and store them in dry, tarnish-resistant environments.
