"Heritage Quality Without the High Street Mark-up"

Hodgson Antiques (www.hodgsonantiques.co.uk) has been in the antique trade and dealing independently since 2012. Based in Derbyshire countryside operating solely online, we specialise in antique and vintage lighting, table lamps, ceiling lights, chandeliers, wall lights and lanterns together with some selectively sourced decorative items. We source items from around the UK, Europe and the rest of the world.

We believe that acquiring exceptional, fully restored period lighting shouldn't require paying premium high-street showroom prices. By operating entirely online and focusing our resources into our own dedicated restoration workshop, we have completely reimagined the traditional antique gallery model. We have a significant structural pricing advantage over traditional brick-and-mortar storefronts, which enables us to offer the exact high quality and meticulous restoration you find in the high street showrooms – delivered directly from our workshop at transparent competitive trade prices passing substantial savings onto our customers.

All our antique lights are fully overhauled, professionally cleaned, rewired and PAT tested to UK standards ready for installation. They are supplied with period-style matching aged fixing brass screws, fittings.

Our lighting is safely wrapped in heavy-duty protective packaging and dispatched the next day via premium tracked courier within mainland UK (delivery charge applies at checkout). As an independent workshop, we highly appreciate direct bank transfers (BACS). If you prefer to pay directly via bank transfer, we will happily waive the delivery fee as a thank you. Please contact us directly via the email link or phone number below before clicking 'Buy Now' to receive your free shipping invoice

FAQs

French gilded wall lights, or appliques, originated in the royal courts of the 17th and 18th centuries, evolving through periods such as Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassicism. These fixtures were traditionally designed to hold candles, reflecting light off gilded surfaces to illuminate grand salons and antechambers.

Authentic antique wall lights are typically constructed from cast bronze, brass, or wrought iron, which is then fire-gilded or coated in gold leaf. Traditional manufacturing involved intricate hand-chasing, soldering individual brass components, and securing elements with threaded fasteners or pins.

Authentication involves examining the casting quality, patination, and construction hardware. Genuine period pieces often show natural wear to the gilding, hand-filed joints, older wiring systems if previously converted, and distinct casting imperfections absent in modern mass-produced replicas.

These fixtures can be incorporated into contemporary spaces by mounting them symmetrically on either side of a fireplace, mirror, or bed to create focal points. Pairing ornate gold finishes with minimalist architectural elements introduces a balanced contrast of texture and history.

Preservation requires dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to prevent accumulation. Harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive polishes, and excessive moisture must be strictly avoided, as they can strip the delicate gold leaf or patinated surface layer.
