Description

A stylish American solid sterling silver and glass honey jar or pot. It is hallmarked STERLING along with the makers mark of R. Blackinton & Co who operated from 1862 to 1967, I would date this piece to c1950s. It has been superbly designed being in the form of a bee hive and the handle on the lid being in the form of a bee. It is in very good condition being free from dings splits and repairs. The glass is complete and free from chips repairs and cracks. It measures approx. 4.25 inches (10.8cm) tall by 3 inches (7.6cm) across and weighs 428 grams complete. A very unusually designed piece.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Figural honey pots modelled after beehives became popular in the 19th and 20th centuries, often incorporating naturalistic insect motifs like bees to symbolise nature and domesticity in dining culture.

These pieces typically combine clear moulded or blown glass bodies, designed to mimic the rings of a skep beehive, with sterling silver lids and figural finials.

Authenticity is determined by checking the sterling silver components for appropriate hallmarks or maker stamps, examining the weight and clarity of the glass, and assessing the casting detail of the figural bee.

It can be displayed functionally on a breakfast table or styled as a decorative accent on an open kitchen shelf or sideboard to add a touch of classic metallic texture.

Wash the glass gently in warm soapy water, and use a specialist non-abrasive silver polish on the metal components, avoiding harsh chemicals that could damage the finish.
