Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A rushlight holder, or rushnip, is an early domestic lighting device designed to hold dried meadow rushes soaked in fat or tallow. Popular from the medieval period through the 18th century, these hand-forged implements used a spring-loaded or counterbalanced arm to secure the burning rush.

Traditional rushlight holders were crafted by local blacksmiths using hand-forged wrought iron for the pincers and arms. The iron mechanism was typically set into a carved or turned wooden base made from dense local hardwoods such as oak, fruitwood, or elm, sometimes fitted with a brass collar.

Authentic period rushlight holders exhibit hand-forged irregularities, visible hammer marks, and asymmetrical features characteristic of blacksmith work. Look for natural wear on the wooden base, deep patination or mild oxidisation on the metal, and hand-cut joinery rather than modern machine fittings.

A rushlight holder functions as a sculptural historical accent on a mantelpiece, side table, or open bookshelf in rustic, traditional, or eclectic interiors. Displaying the object alongside period ceramics or organic textures highlights its primitive form and metalwork craftsmanship.

Dust the item gently with a soft, dry brush or cloth and keep it away from excessive moisture. Applying a clear microcrystalline wax or natural beeswax polish to both the metal and wooden base preserves the patina and guards the iron against oxidisation.
