19th century
Sold 22 April 2025 · Farnham Antique Carpets
This “Rare Square Antique Ushak Carpet” found a buyer.

It was listed by Farnham Antique Carpets. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A rare and stunning square antique Ushak carpet with sublime earthy tones.  The background colour is unusual, using natural un-dyed wool, which is varying shades of white and grey tones.  Using teal blue green shades for the minor borders and detailing and orange and pink hues too, the palette of dyes is wonderful and famously used by the Anatolian weavers in the late 19th century.

The square size and open design is really the perfect combination for a decorative carpet, with no central medallion, this excellent antique Ushak could be used in any room.  Look closely and the detail the weavers have used for the small flowers at the end of the vines and the boteh motifs in the minor borders are so delicate. Condition is impressive, with no significant issues, some small old repairs in a few places, but in general this carpet woven around 140 years ago is in stellar order.

If you request a home visit to see this beautiful rare Ushak carpet at home, we can arrange a day and time convenient for you.  We love to travel, having visited clients and interior designers all over the UK for the last 30 years.  If you prefer to book in a showroom visit, we would love to welcome to our barn showroom in Crondall, Surrey.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ushak carpets are traditional hand-knotted floor coverings produced in the town of Usak in western Turkey, renowned for their distinctive designs and muted, luminous colour palettes.

These carpets are traditionally constructed using hand-spun wool for the pile, warp, and weft, often utilising natural vegetable dyes derived from plants, roots, and insects to achieve their characteristic hues.

Authenticity is identified by examining the irregularities in the hand-knotting, the quality of the wool, the depth and oxidation of natural dyes, and the characteristic large-scale geometric or floral motifs.

An antique Ushak carpet can be anchored in a modern room to add texture, warmth, and historical contrast, pairing effectively with minimalist furniture or traditional woodwork alike.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional organic washing when necessary, and keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
