Antique Angora Ushak Rug

19th century
Description

In remarkable original and excellent condition, this late 19th century antique Angora Ushak rug was woven in a small town in Western Anatolia, this type of Turkish carpet are known as Angora rugs. The late 19th century weavers came from villages outside of Ushak and employed tribal techniques. Paramount to these techniques was the use of larger knots on these carpets (sometimes less than 30 knots per square inch) and an all-wool foundation.  This is why Ushak's have a soft and loose feel and their designs are more often very open.

Woven with amazing teal blue/greens, rich reds and orange and sage green tones, the natural dyes are quite stunning! In really good original condition, with only tiny areas of lower pile.  The majority of this rug has a soft and dense pile all over, please view all the additional images to see the condition up close.  A wonderful and rare rug woven over 140 years ago, also a rare size too - as more often they produced larger carpets.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the town of Usak in Western Anatolia, Ushak rugs are Anatolian textiles characterised by soft colour palettes, large-scale floral lattices, and hand-spun wool construction that frequently incorporates lustrous Angora goat hair.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool or Angora wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton foundation. Natural plant dyes create the muted tones, ranging from madder reds to soft slate blues and ochre.

Authentic Ushak carpets feature asymmetrical Ghiordes knots, a soft and pliable pile texture, flexible foundation threads, and characteristic subtle colour variations known as abrash throughout the field.

An Ushak rug serves as a foundational floor piece in neutral living rooms, grounding contemporary furniture or complementing period interiors through soft pattern contrast and muted tones.

Vacuum regularly on a low-suction setting without a rotating beater bar to protect the hand-knotted pile. Address liquid spills immediately by blotting with an un-dyed cloth and use professional rug conservators for deep cleaning.
