FAQs

Victorian pierced silver dishes became immensely popular during the late 19th century, driven by advancements in machine stamping and traditional hand-piercing techniques that allowed silversmiths to create intricate openwork patterns economically for the expanding middle class.

These items were typically crafted from sterling silver, containing 92.5% pure silver alloyed with copper for durability, and were produced using a combination of stamping, piercing, chasing, and hand-engraving.

Authentic pieces are identified through clear hallmarks stamped into the metal, which typically include the assay office mark, the standard mark for sterling silver, a date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture, and the makers mark.

A silver dish can be incorporated into contemporary schemes by using it as a reflective catch-all on a hallway console, a sophisticated dressing table tray for jewellery, or a contrasting metallic accent on a wooden coffee table.

Antique silver should be washed occasionally in warm water with a mild, phosphate-free soap, dried thoroughly with a soft microfibre cloth, and polished sparingly with a reputable silver cream only when necessary to preserve the patina.
