A George II bureau bookcase is a tall piece of furniture from the mid-18th century, combining an upper cabinet for books with a lower slant-front writing desk and drawers.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid oak or pine frames, veneered with highly figured mahogany, and fitted with brass hardware and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, secondary woods like pine or oak in unseen areas, and patination consistent with age.

Position the piece against a neutral wall to highlight the wood grain, and balance its heavy visual weight with minimalist surrounding decor and subtle lighting.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and treat it periodically with microcrystalline wax to preserve the finish.
