A beautiful and very interesting antique solid sterling silver banded cigar case. It is hallmarked for London 1867 with the makers mark being HWD. It has been beautifully designed being rigid and leather and silver clad. Most interesting is the front that reads RSC 9th Lancers. The only RSC I can find in the Lancers during this period is Robert Stewart Cleland who would have been a Captain at the time. He served in the Indian Mutiny and later having risen to the rank of Colonel lead the 9th lancers in the charge of Killa Kazi during the second Afghan War where he sustained a sword blow to the arm and a bullet wound, he died the following year of his wounds. Photos of him exist in Queen Victoria''s collection. It is in super condition being free from dings splits holes etc...a small area of banding has come away from the leather on one corner - see final photo. It measures approx. 6.25 (15.8cms) by almost 4 inches (9.8cms) by 1 inch thick and weighs 286 grams. A museum worthy piece.
