Edwardian novelty silver pin cushions, popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, were produced by master silversmiths such as Sampson Mordan. These functional yet whimsical items often depicted animals, birds, and household objects, reflecting the periods taste for detailed miniature craftsmanship.

These items were typically crafted using sterling silver via processes like repousse and casting, complemented by a fitted velvet or plush cushion insert designed to securely hold sewing pins.

Authentic pieces bear clear hallmarks indicating the assay office, date letter, and makers mark (such as S.M for Sampson Mordan). The crispness of the feather or fur chasing and the quality of the internal construction are also key indicators of authenticity.

These compact pieces serve as exquisite tabletop accents, fitting seamlessly onto a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or dressing table where their intricate detail can be appreciated up close.

Sterling silver should be gently cleaned with a specialized microfibre polishing cloth to avoid abrasive damage, taking care to keep polishes and moisture away from the velvet cushion insert.
