Victorian novelty bookmarks gained immense popularity during the late 19th century as literacy rates rose and reading became a widespread leisure activity. Silversmiths created imaginative designs, including daggers, trowels, and page turners, incorporating local gemstones like Scottish agates.

These pieces are typically constructed from sterling silver, often featuring hand-carved natural stones such as banded agate or jasper for the handles. Artisans utilised techniques like engraving, filigree work, and secure bezel settings to attach the decorative stones to the silver blades.

Authentic pieces bear British silver hallmarks, which typically include a makers mark (such as CN for Crisford & Norris), a standard mark indicating sterling silver, a town mark, and a date letter corresponding to the assay office records of the period.

Small antique desk accessories add curated detail and historical interest when displayed on open shelving, placed atop coffee table books, or housed in a glazed cabinet alongside other small curiosities.

Silver should be cleaned periodically with a professional microfibre polishing cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding harsh liquid dips that can dislodge or damage cemented organic stones like agate. Store them in a dry, tarnish-resistant pouch when not on display.
