Elkington & Co. English Bronze Candlesticks

19th century
For Sale by Cella
Description

Very elegant pair of classic English mid 19th century Neo-Pompeian style gilt bronze candlesticks stamped 'E & Co' with a crown above in a shield for Elkington & Company. Both candlesticks are also stamped with a script 'c' and a number '5'. The underside of each candlestick is numbered '1228'. Inspired by roman originals, after the antique they are well cast and chased. Probably from a large country estate they were originally gilded but have faded and worn to create a beautiful patina that is impossible to replicate. Superb condition. Circa 1850.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Classical Revival metalwork from this period is characterised by motifs drawn from ancient Greek and Roman architecture, including fluted columns, acanthus leaves, and paw feet, manufactured via detailed casting methods.

Victorian manufacturers primarily utilised cast bronze, brass, electroplated nickel silver, and gilded copper alloys, often weighted internally to ensure stability.

Authentic pieces generally feature stamped makers marks, date letters, or numerical design registry marks on the underside of the base, accompanied by precise casting and heavy structural weight.

Pairing classical bronze candlesticks with modern linen table runners, minimalist ceramics, or placing them on a dark wooden mantelpiece provides balanced visual texture.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes, as these remove the aged surface patination and original gilding.
