Outstanding Japanese Meiji (early 20thC) fine bronze study of the Great Buddha at Kamakura (Kamakura Daibutsu), an imposing okimono of this iconic statue simply robed and sat cross-legged with its hands in its lap in quiet contemplation. 31cm wide x 26cm deep x 36cm high, weight 7.25kg.

The great bronze Buddha of Kamakura – it weighs around 21 tonnes and stands 48 feet high – replaced a wooden Buddha in the 13th century and is a Japanese national treasure. Although it is located in the grounds of a the Kotokuin Buddhist temple belonging to the Jodo Sect of Buddhism, the Jodo are committed to the liberation of all beings, meaning that the Great Buddha is there for all: saints and sinners, rich and poor, young and old.

Excellent condition and patina.
