FAQs

The Meiji period spans from 1868 to 1912, marking an era when Japanese metalworkers achieved international acclaim for their master craftsmanship in bronze, iron, and mixed metals, frequently producing pieces for export.

These sculptures were predominantly produced using the lost-wax casting method, followed by meticulous hand-chiselling, finishing, and the application of chemical patination techniques to achieve deep, rich surface tones.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit heavy weight, hand-finished detailing in the hair and drapery, natural oxidisation patterns underneath the patination, and occasionally artist signatures or foundry marks stamped on the base.

A bronze sculpture serves as a sculptural focal point and can be styled on a mantelpiece, console table, or bookshelf to introduce historical texture, cultural depth, and a grounded silhouette to modern spaces.

Antique bronze should be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding any water, chemical cleaners, or abrasives that can strip the historical patina.
