This late Meiji period patinated bronze statue depicts a Japanese standing mythical Oni demon on a later substantial green marble block base. The figure has small horns on the head, a scowling facial expression, stands with legs apart on clawed feet, and wears a fundoshi loincloth over a muscular torso with detailed drapery folds. The bronze has a dark brown coloration and a deep rich patina, contrasting with the varied white veining throughout the green marble plinth. The whole piece measures 18.2 cm high, 8.2 cm wide and 5.5 cm deep. Positioned on a bookshelf within a gentleman's library, the sculpture brings a traditional Japanese mythological motif into interior styling. The dark bronze surface catches light across the textured musculature and facial features, while the heavy stone base provides stable display support on any flat surface.

FAQs

Meiji period bronze sculptures (18681912) are defined by realistic modeling, refined casting techniques, and themes drawn from Japanese folklore, nature, and mythology. Following the decline of samurai sword production, metal craftsmen transitioned to decorative art, producing detailed bronzes for export and collection.

These figures were typically cast using the lost-wax technique (cire perdue) using bronze alloys composed of copper, tin, and zinc. Patination was applied using chemical solutions and heat to achieve rich brown, dark black, or warm copper colours before mounting on wood or stone bases.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy weight, hand-finished chasing, detailed facial expressions, and natural wear to the patina around raised areas. Look for artisan signatures engraved into the bronze, fine muscular detail, and age-consistent oxidisation on the underside.

Place the sculpture on a dark wood desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece where the dark metal contrasts against neutral backgrounds. Pair it with books, ceramics, or understated foliage to allow the detailed silhouette to stand out.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth or brush. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, polish, or liquid solvents on either the bronze patina or the marble, and apply a light coat of microcrystalline wax annually to preserve the metal finish.
