This Japanese bronze sculpture depicts an elephant accompanied by two young boys. Dating from 1930, the piece exhibits a dark brown patinated surface with cast details across the figures and animal. One boy stands atop the elephant body holding a container, while the second boy sits on the rear section. The elephant is modeled with its head lowered downwards and tusks visible near the ground. Measuring 23 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 11 cm deep, the sculpture is sized for placement on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library or similar interior setting. The dark patina and sculptural form lend an established decorative presence to display surfaces throughout the home.

Japanese bronze casting reached a peak of artistic expression during the Edo and Meiji periods, transitioning from religious Buddhist casting to fine decorative art pieces known as okimono. Craftsmanship evolved to capture detailed animal forms, naturalistic human figures, and mythological stories for domestic and export markets.

These sculptures were traditionally crafted using lost-wax casting methods (cire perdue) to capture intricate details. High-quality bronze alloys containing copper, tin, and zinc were used, followed by hand-chasing, polishing, and chemical patination to achieve deep tone finishes.

Authentic Japanese bronzes often feature refined hand-carved chasing, proportional weight, and multi-layered natural patination accumulated through age. Makers marks or artist signatures (mei) may be incised or cast into the base or underside of the piece.

A dark bronze figure provides sculptural contrast when positioned on a minimalist mantelpiece, side table, or floating shelf. Displaying the item against neutral walls alongside textured ceramics highlights its dark patinated surface and detailed contours.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to reach carved crevices. Avoid abrasive metal polishes and water, applying a thin coat of microcrystalline wax periodically to protect the original patination.
