A bonheur du jour is a type of small, light ladies writing desk that first appeared in France during the mid-18th century and experienced a revival during the Victorian era. It typically features an enclosed cabinet or superstructure above a writing surface, designed for correspondence and keeping stationery.

These pieces were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or satinwood, often adorned with marquetry, burr veneers, and ormolu or brass mounts. Many examples also incorporate porcelain plaques, painted panels, or inlaid brass stringing.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the timber construction methods, hand-cut dovetails in the drawers, the patination of the wood, and the quality of the brass mounts or ceramic plaques. Period pieces will exhibit signs of age-appropriate wear and traditional joinery techniques consistent with the 1800s.

This piece functions well as a decorative focal point in a living room, bedroom, or home study. It can be paired with a simple modern chair to create a striking contrast, or used as a dedicated writing surface and display area for small collectibles.

Maintain the wood by applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the grain, and avoid placing the piece near direct heat sources or strong sunlight. Clean brass or ormolu mounts gently with a dry microfiber cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes.
