Victorian 12ct Gold Filigree Coral Cameo Brooch

19th century
For Sale by Corvidae Antique
Description

No well-to-do Victorian lady's wardrobe was complete without some type of cameo, an accessory which was popularised when wealthy English people brought them home from Italy as souvenirs of their "Grand Tour", particularly once they became a staple of Queen Victoria's dress.

This 19th century coral cameo brooch is mounted in the most exquisite 12-carat gold wirework which has a lovely rich high-carat colour. The finely carved coral is a deep peachy-salmon tone.

The brooch is in excellent antique condition. Fixes with a sturdy pin and clasp (likely a later addition).

Stamped K12 on the pin.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the 19th century, cameo brooches often featured carved classical profiles in natural materials like coral and shell. Grand Tour souvenirs and romanticism driven by Queen Victoria made coral cameos highly sought after across Europe.

Victorian jewellers combined hand-carved Mediterranean coral with intricate gold wirework, known as filigree. Settings were typically crafted in low to mid-carat yellow gold, such as 9ct or 12ct, to provide durability while supporting delicate detail.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature hand-carved details with slight natural variations in the coral structure rather than uniform moulded resin. Historical construction markers include extended pin stems, C-clasps, and fine wirework characteristic of 19th-century metalworking.

Antique jewellery can be presented inside glass-topped display boxes, framed in velvet-lined shadow boxes, or arranged on ceramic trinket trays atop a dressing table. Displaying fine brooches under glass protects delicate filigree while adding historical texture to a room.

Coral is an organic, porous material that should never be submerged in water or cleaned with harsh chemicals. Wipe the brooch gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and store it away from direct sunlight and heat.
