Circa 1870.

Chuval are storage bags used by the Turkmen nomads for the storage of personal items inside the yurt and also for the transport of goods on the backs of camels or horses. They were usually woven in pairs. 'Ak' translates to white; these chuval are associated with weddings and formed part of the brides dowry, they were prized possessions and passed down through the

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Tekke Turkmen Ak Chuval is a nomadic storage bag face woven by the Tekke tribe of Central Asia, featuring a light-coloured lower border or elem panel alongside horizontal bands of geometric tribal motifs.

These textiles were hand-woven using hand-spun wool yarn, often incorporating cotton accents, dyed with natural plant and insect dyes to create deep terracotta reds, dark blues, and cream tones.

Authentic 19th-century examples display fine knotting density, soft natural-dyed wool, a supple handle, and heraldic tribal motifs woven into structured horizontal bands.

A chuval face can be mounted and framed as textured wall art, displayed over a wooden bench, or styled alongside modern neutral decor as a focal accent.

Keep the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent natural dye degradation, vacuum gently without a rotary beater bar, and consult a specialist conservator for cleaning or mounting.
