Antique George III Sterling Silver Dish Cross (1764)

£1,995    $2,608    €2,379
An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Georgian English cast sterling silver dish cross; an addition to our Georgian dining silverware collection.

This exceptional antique sterling silver dish cross* has a plain Regency style form.

Each plain arm of this Georgian dish cross terminates with a plain lobed thumbpiece, surmounting an impressive adjustable cast scrolling leg and splayed lobed foot.

The pierced decorated boss of each leg collars the bar and moves horizontally to allow the frame size to be adjusted to hold either round or oblong dishes.

The plain four spoke frame conjoins at a central circular hinge, incorporating the original spirit burner.

The spirit burner is embellished with bands of tooled decoration, incorporating a bright cut engraved crest.

The rim of the burner is encompassed with a rope twist decorated border.

* The dish cross, often known as a ''spider'', was invented in Ireland. The dish cross was utilised in the last half of the 18th century, with the central segment being optimised to hold a spirit burner or candle.

Condition

This antique Georgian silver dish cross is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the burner and part hallmarks to each foot are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of 18th century silverware.
