Size: 2ft 10in x 1ft 0in (87 x 31cm) excluding tassels.
Antique Yomut Turkmen torba with asmalyk style lattice design.
Circa 1880.
Torba are shallow wall bags used mainly in tents or yurts for the storage of personal belongings, they were also used to decorate the sides of a camel in a wedding procession. Often only the piled face survives and the plain weave backs have been removed.
This example has a variant serrated lattice and erre gul design on an ivory ground. This is very similar to the design that is often found on Yomut asmalyk. The torba is complete with a ivory plain weave back and has the added interest of retaining all of the original long tassels.
The torba is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and good pile.
This is a great display item, it is so unusual to find examples like this in complete original condition.
