Silver plating on base metals like copper or brass became widespread during the 18th and 19th centuries, notably through the Sheffield plate technique and later electroplating developed in the 1840s, offering an accessible alternative to solid sterling silver for formal dining.

These items are typically constructed from a base metal core such as copper, brass, or Britannia metal, which is then coated with a thin layer of silver. Many feature weighted bases filled with resin, pitch, or plaster to provide stability for multiple candles.

Authenticity can be determined by examining hallmarks or makers marks, wear patterns revealing the base metal underneath, weight distribution, and construction details such as hand-chased detailing rather than modern cast uniformity.

Such pieces add a touch of formal elegance when used as a dining table centrepiece or placed on a sideboard, contrasting effectively against minimalist contemporary surfaces and neutral palettes.

Preservation requires regular gentle dusting and occasional cleaning with a specialist non-abrasive silver polish to prevent tarnish accumulation, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip the plating.
