Antique English Georgian Pewter Dish / Charger

18th century
Description

Another good Early / Mid 18th Century Antique English Georgian Pewter Dish or Charger of unusually large size and fine colour, this one with with single reeded edge. The reverse bearing the marks of John Duncumb of Birmingham, { Cotterell 1465 }, who is there described as having been refused admission by redemption to the London Pewterers Company in 1706. This together with the initials, S above N E, which latter would suggest that the piece was perhaps originally a wedding gift. Cotterell, writing almost a century ago, at a time when the fashion for “Elizabethan” oak furniture together with period accessories such as pewter was at its height, expresses some reservations regarding the products of the Duncombe family, suggesting that spurious reproductions of their work had perhaps entered the market. Be that as it may, there can be no doubt as to the authenticity of this lovely old charger which clearly dates from circa 1730 and which as always comes with our unconditional Guarantee and Warranty.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian pewter charger is a large, shallow metal plate crafted during the 18th to early 19th centuries, primarily used for serving food or as decorative display pieces on dressers.

Period pewter was traditionally composed of a tin-based alloy mixed with small quantities of copper, lead, or antimony to increase durability before being hand-turned on a lathe.

Authentic pieces often exhibit touchmarks or maker stamps near the rim or base, visible lathe turning rings, a dark oxidised patina, and heavy structural weight.

Pewter chargers can be mounted on gallery walls, displayed upright on open shelving, or placed flat on a sideboard as a catchall or centrepiece bowl.

Dust regularly with a soft, clean cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip the historical oxidised surface patina.
