The Meiji period spans from 1868 to 1912 in Japan, marking an era of significant artistic output and international trade where large decorative plates, known as chargers, were produced for both domestic use and export.

These pieces are typically crafted from high-fired white porcelain and decorated with mineral-based polychrome enamels, often incorporating gilt highlights and detailed overglaze painting techniques.

Authentic pieces often feature hand-painted motifs, craquelure within the glaze, artisan or kiln marks on the reverse, and characteristic weight and texture consistent with late 19th-century Japanese manufacturing methods.

These chargers can be mounted securely on a wall as a focal point or displayed flat on a heavy wooden surface using a specialized plate stand to highlight their intricate patterns and geometric shapes.

To preserve the enamel and gilt details, keep the pieces away from direct sunlight, handle them with clean hands or gloves, dust them gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoid using chemical cleaning agents.
