These are fine antique pair of Minton Parian Porcelain Figure sculpture Groups modelled as Una and the Lion & Ariadne and the Panther, modelled by John Bell on rectangular bases with moulded Minton marks and mounted later on ormolu table lamp bases with shades, and bearing the Victorian date stamp for 1861.

A Parian-ware figure of Ariadne reclining nude on the back of a stylised panther, she wears an acanthus wreath on her head, her left leg tucked beneath her right, holding drapery in her left hand, her left leg crossed under her right, on a rectangular plinth.

The story of Una and the Lion is one of the most memorable and significant episodes in Edmund Spenser’s epic poem, The Faerie Queene. Una, a virtuous and pure maiden, represents Truth and is the central character in this allegorical tale.

At a pivotal moment in the story, Una comes face to face with a terrifying lion. Instead of fleeing in fear, she demonstrates her unwavering faith and innocence. The lion, sensing her pure spirit, becomes her protector and companion, symbolizing strength and courage.
