Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century French Restoration secretaire desk follows a classical design aesthetic inspired by the French Chateau style. Constructed from walnut with a warm brown timber finish, the piece is topped with a dark fossil marble slab. The upper section contains a concealed drawer beneath the marble top, secured by a central keyhole. Below this, double cupboard doors are flanked by decorative spiral twist columns down each front corner, while the cabinet rests on carved scroll feet at the base. All locks and keys are in full working order, and the interior leather writing surface remains in great condition. Measuring 100 cm high, 136 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, the cabinet provides a substantial storage surface for everyday administrative tasks. The secretaire fits naturally into a home study, library, or living room space as a practical desk and storage cabinet.

FAQs

A secretaire abattant is a style of tall French writing cabinet featuring a drop-down front flap that opens to reveal a desk surface and interior compartments, often paired with lower cupboard doors or drawers.

These cabinets are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, often finished with decorative veneers, marble slab tops, and hand-cast brass hardware or key escutcheons.

Authentic pieces feature period-appropriate construction markers, including hand-cut dovetail joints, original lock mechanisms, hand-planed back panels, and natural wood oxidation consistent with age.

Place the piece against a neutral wall in a hallway or living space, balancing its substantial wood tone with modern minimalist art above or contemporary table lamps.

Clean the wood surface with a soft cloth and apply beeswax periodically to maintain the patina, while cleaning the marble slab with a pH-neutral cleaner to prevent staining or etching.
