Antique Tekke Turkmen mafrash, face of a small storage bag.

Circa 1870 or earlier.

This small Tekke Turkmen mafrash is the face of a small bag used for keeping personal belongings in, it was usually hung up inside the yurt. This example is of 'aina' gul design, there are four rows of three box like guls containing the kotchak design, which is filled with a star. The purple / pink dye is cochineal or lac.

The bag face is in fair condition with even wear and medium pile and corrosion, there are old repairs to the corners and sides.

A good display item that could be hung on a wall or used on top of a table or chest.

A mafrash is a small woven bag panel crafted by nomadic Tekke Turkmen tribes in Central Asia. It was originally used to store and transport personal belongings during seasonal migrations, featuring dense hand-knotted pile and tribal geometric emblems.

These textiles were hand-knotted using locally sourced wool for both the pile and foundation. Dyes were derived from natural vegetable and mineral sources, producing deep madder reds, indigo blues, and natural cream accents.

Authentic 19th-century Tekke pieces feature extremely fine knot density, supple wool foundations, and precise geometric heraldic motifs known as guls. The presence of natural madder red and indigo dyes alongside specific field grid structures helps confirm age and origin.
