Pretty Lava Cameo Pendant in 9ct Tested Frame

A pretty lava cameo depicting a classical portrait of a lady with ringleted hair and a draped dress or tunic in the style of ancient Rome. The relief image is delicately carved from the light lava with fine detail and good depth. The cameo brooch is in an oval setting that has been tested as 9ct gold. It has a gold hasp from which the cameo may be suspended from a chain as an attractive pendant.

 

Lava cameos became popular in the 19th century as souvenirs of a European Grand Tour, and a visit to Italy's Amalfi coast, where the abundant lava from Mt Vesuvius provided the raw materials.

Period: Victorian In super condition.
