Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fire dogs, also known as andirons, are paired metal supports placed within an open hearth to hold burning logs off the fireplace floor. This elevation allows air to circulate freely beneath the fuel, improving combustion efficiency and directing smoke up the chimney flue.

During the late 19th century, hearth metalwork was commonly produced from cast iron, wrought iron, brass, or polished steel. Higher-end Victorian designs frequently combined heavy cast metal bases with turned steel uprights, decorative urn finials, and hand-chased relief work.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut screw threads, square fixings, subtle hand-forging variations, and minor surface pitting in unpolished areas. The steel displays a deeper lustre than modern chrome plating and often bears historical wear along the rear iron log-supports.

Position the pair symmetrically inside an open fireplace aperture or on a restored hearth stone to frame the chimney breast. Their clean metallic finish harmonises equally well with period marble surrounds or modern concrete and dark-painted backdrops.

Dust the surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a coat of clear microcrystalline wax to guard against humidity and rust. Avoid liquid chemical cleaners or water, which cause immediate oxidisation on polished steel surfaces.
