This pair of Victorian neoclassical fire dogs originates from late nineteenth-century England and dates to around 1890. Rendered in polished steel with a bright silver finish, the matching pair serves as a decorative hearth accessory. Each dog stands on scrolled feet and features a prominent ram's head relief above moulded detailing, supporting an urn finial adorned with draped swags and a pointed spire top. Turned uprights project from the rear to hold logs within the fireplace. Measuring 39 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 24 cm deep, these functional metalwork items bring classical ornament into a traditional sitting room or living space. They sit directly upon the hearth floor in front of an open fireplace, combining structural utility with sculptural detail to frame the fire opening when in use.
