Technical Description

An engraved yellow gold brooch, produced in Scotland or England around 1880. A particularly deep-hued Scottish Cairngorm citrine is cut flat and set centrally. Beautiful gold scrollwork forms a quatrefoil shape in the rococo style. The handmade c-scroll catch, bar hinge and pin are in full working order.

Date & Origin

Scotland or England, period of Queen Victoria, c1880.

Condition

Excellent. The clasp is in full working order.

Historical Context

In 1880 Greenwich Mean Time was adopted as the legal standard throughout Great Britain by the Statutes Act. The University of London also in this year awarded the first degrees to women.
