Description

A lovely example of a Cafe Royal Spoon American silver Gorham Manufacturing Co, crescent mark for 1895. I understand that this would sit on top of the cup, hence the hook on one side, a sugar cube would be placed in the middle and brandy poured over, then tipped into the cup. Some descriptions say that the brandy would be set alight, no evidence that this has happened to this spoon. Lovely hexagonal shaped with a beaded edge to the bowl and handle. A very elegant piece of silver.

L 11 cm

W 4.5 cm

Date of Manufacture

Digby Antiques (Wiltshire) has dated this Antique Silver Cafe Royal Spoon to the 1890s.

FAQs

Cafe royal spoons emerged during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, specifically designed for preparing and serving specialized coffee drinks like Cafe Royal, which involved melting sugar over alcohol.

These pieces are typically forged from sterling silver, containing 92.5 percent silver by weight alloyed with copper for durability, often featuring hand-chased details or cast components.

Authenticity is verified through makers marks, hallmark symbols, and sterling stamps pressed into the metal, alongside testing for silver purity and examining the natural patina and wear patterns.

Antique silver items add historic texture when displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, mounted in shadow boxes, or styled neatly on silver trays in dining spaces.

Preservation requires gentle cleaning with non-abrasive silver polishes, storing in tarnish-resistant cloth or acid-free tissue, and avoiding harsh chemicals or dishwasher cleaning.
