Antique Solid Silver Gilt Vase/urn Pair with Figural Roman Classical Influences - George Nathan & Ridley Hayes 1910

1900 - 1920
Description

We are delighted to offer this magnificent pair of solid silver urns/vases made in Chester by George Nathan & Ridley Hayes, 1910.

Majestic and exuding splendour, this pair is most certainly eye-catching and stunning even upon a quick glance.

Fully gilt on the exterior and interior (gold on top of solid silver), not only does this prevent the usual silver tarnishing, but presents a glamourous rich gold accent, perfect for highlighting an interior or a collection among other antiques and silverware.

The urns feature a classical Roman-inspired design with heavy influences from the likes of the Lansdowne urn and similar stylistically to many vases/urns found in Piranesi's engravings. A band of scrolled acanthus and floral motifs are chased to the mid-section with a fluted and written top lid and base.

Aesthetics and proportions have been carefully designed on this pair with a wonderful balance of the pedestal foot supporting the body and the top pointed bud finial. The two accented cast silver satyr masks on the side elevate the overall classical design and reveal the level of intricacy and silver craftsmanship (zooming into the bead section will reveal a fine level of detailing).

In addition to their decorative purposes on a table or mantlepiece, with a touch of creativity, they may also serve as a practical pair whether as a sugar urn, storing some sweets or even as a flower vase once the lids are removed.

Owing to its spectacular form and lustre, this pair would most certainly grace and elevate a rich antique interior but also may serve as a juxtaposing and distinguished piece of decor in a modern setting. In spite of seemingly conflicting styles, such classical designs may just be the right accent to a more minimalist design and a unique talking point within a setting, rich with history and classical artistic influences.

The urns are hallmarked with matching English marks on the base and inner edge of the lids.

CONDITION

Excellent Condition - The urns are in excellent antique condition, with major damage or issues. They appear to have been very well kept with minimal surface wear almost mint/mirorlike.
