Antique Kurdish Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

Striking antique Kurdish rug woven in the early 20th century using interesting floral designs often seen in ancient Joshughan carpets.  The border design of straight line vines with flowers is both delightful and whimsical, an insight to the weavers mind and how playful they wanted to be weaving this tribal rug.

These tribal Persian rugs were generally woven in or around the Zagros Mountains area of Northwestern Persia by the Lurs people. These Persian carpets are beautiful tribal art, often primitive but have wonderful designs and colours.  Kurdish rug weavers were mainly woman who adapted and experimented with neighbouring weaving designs and used them in their own carpets. Nomadic rugs of the Kurds of Azerbaijan and the Caucasus used often primitive designs, whereas the the Kurdish Northwest Persia weavers used Caucasian designs of Kazak and Karabagh such as the diagonally striped field or bold geometric motifs.

The pile height of this tribal rug is very good indeed, view all the additional images to see the condition up close.  A wonderful antique Kurdish rug, ready to be used for another 100 plus years.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Antique Kurdish rugs are hand-knotted textiles woven by Kurdish tribes in Western Persia and Anatolia, characterised by bold geometric patterns, deep saturated colours, and durable wool construction.

These rugs are traditionally crafted using hand-spun wool yarn for both the pile and the foundation, coloured with vegetable dyes and constructed on portable hand looms.

Authentic pieces typically feature wool warp and weft foundations rather than cotton, slight asymmetry in the geometric motifs, natural dye variations, and a heavy handle.

A tribal Kurdish rug can be anchored beneath neutral contemporary furniture to provide visual texture, warmth, and historical contrast within modern or eclectic interiors.

Vacuum regularly on a low setting without a rotating beater bar, rotate the rug annually to distribute traffic evenly, and clean liquid spills immediately with cold water and neutral detergent.
