Description

A lovely nine-carat gold late Victorian/early Edwardian watch fob which could happily be worn around the neck as a pendant. The fob contains a working compass set behind glass, which can be removed by just pushing it out from one side; on that side the compass is edged in yellow gold, contrasting with the more rosy gold of the fob itself. Either side of the pendant can be worn to the front.

The fob is stamped 9CT and JD on one edge.

The piece is in very good antique condition, with just some abrasion to the glass surfaces and dust specks visible behind.

Size: Approximately 3.3 x 2.1cm.

Weight: 4.7g.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Historically, watch fobs were decorative ornaments or seals attached to a pocket watch ribbon or chain, worn by men and women during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Traditional pieces are typically crafted from various purities of gold, such as 9ct or 15ct, often enclosing glass crystals, mineral dials, and miniature magnetic needles.

Authentic pieces generally feature period-appropriate hallmarks, hand-finished construction details, and natural signs of age-related oxidisation and wear.

Antique pendants and fobs can be suspended from modern chains to create a layered necklace look, blending historical craftsmanship with daily wear.

Care should involve gentle cleaning with a soft cloth and warm soapy water, avoiding harsh chemical dips or ultrasonic cleaners that can dislodge fragile glass faces.
