Timuri and Baluch rugs are hand-knotted textiles traditionally produced by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes inhabiting the borderlands of Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan, typically characterised by geometric motifs and dark woollen foundations.

These rugs are traditionally constructed using handspun wool for the pile, warp, and weft, often utilising natural vegetable dyes derived from plants, roots, and minerals to achieve deep, rich colour palettes.

Authentic pieces from the late 19th century feature irregular hand-knotted structures, natural dye variations, authentic wear patterns, and traditional tribal iconography such as repeated geometric gulls or stepped medallions.

An antique tribal rug adds texture and grounding warmth to contemporary spaces, working effectively as a focal point over hardwood floors or layered over larger neutral jute flooring.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without rotary brushes, professional specialist washing when necessary, and keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent dye degradation.
