The cylindrical shape and proportion of the box are wonderful and allow for each element to be amply embellished with an array of techniques and motifs.
The top lid features a most striking wavy sunburst/ray guilloché pattern encircled by a wreath of laurel leaves and crossed ribbons in typical French style and grace. The attention to detail can be further appreciated upon closely examining the background of the wreath where fine perpendicular lines create a contrast to the slightly raised leaves.
The entire side and circumference of the box feature further bands of laurel wreaths and engine turning. The base which would not normally be visible is equally decorative and is a testament to the 'no cost cut' craftsmanship of the box, featuring another burst ray pattern which expands from the centre to the very edge.
The interior is also fully silver gilt which acts as a layer of protection from the contents inside oxidising/tarnishing the silver.
Overall, a stunning piece of fine French 19th-century silver gilt ware, ideal for box collections or as a spectacular one-off accenting piece in a collection or interior setting. Furthermore, owing to its versatile shape and size, aside from snuff/tobacco, it could also be used to hold sweets, mints, medication or even as a small jewel box.
French hallmarks are present on the inner edge of the box and lid with a maker's mark (indistinct) and 'Mercury's head' (950 silver standard for export).

CONDITION
Excellent Condition - The silver gilt box is in excellent antique condition with no damage or issues. For accuracy: there is some slight wear/discolouration to the edge of the inner gilding and some slight spots as shown in the image. Otherwise in good order with a good closure of the lid.
